Malcolm X joins Alex on the bridge as they head towards Honolulu. Malcolm X requests permission to leave Malcolm asks Hughes to allow him to leave Utopia; Hughes refuses. Malcolm X rejects Hughes's authority to hold people on Malcolm rejects the idea that Hughes has the right to hold people on Utopia island. Malcolm X founds the Free Spirits, a faction of Utopians who reject Hughes's authority. Malcolm X recruits residents who believe Utopia has become a prison, including Martin Luther King Jr, Janis Joplin, Tupac Shakur, Marc Bolan, Steve McQueen, Brandon Lee, Kurt Cobain, and D.B. Cooper. Malcolm X knew JFK in the old world and shared mutual respect with him. Malcolm X rejects Hughes's authority, contrasting with JFK's acceptance of Utopia. Malcolm X refuses to promise Lauren escape because the Free Spirits themselves have no way off the island.
